In the Land of the Blind...

Hulk Hercules gets reviewed!
[info]sonyamsipes
I was excited to see today that Hulk Hercules Professional Wrestler by [info]cathschaffstump has been reviewed on Amazon.Com and recieved four stars!

Jon Gibbs says of HHPW: "An interesting retelling of the Hercules legend" and "a fun read". Super excited to see that someone out there has read Catherine's effort & enjoyed it enough to post a review. Read the review here: http://www.amazon.com/Hercules-Professional-Wrestler-Catherine-Schaff-Stump/dp/0979088976/ref=sr_1_1?s=gateway&ie=UTF8&qid=1285295784&sr=8-1

In other great HHPW news, we received a second small order from FLR - while we aren't gangbusters yet (CatsCurious is a *small* press you know) we are at least getting orders which is something to be proud of!

Stop by [info]cathschaffstump's LJ blog and give her a congrats!

The Faery Taile Project #2 featuring...
[info]sonyamsipes
[info]antonstrout

There are two sides to every story... And we here at CatsCurious Press think that our readers deserve to read BOTH! Again!

A Call for Submissions... of the Faery Taile Kynde!

CatsCurious Press will re-open to submissions starting October 1, 2010 for all well-written, humorous fairy tale re-tellings (except red riding hood, but that's because we've been there, done that)! But there's a catch -- these stories must be written from ONE POV only... the protagonist's.

Why would we be so strict, you ask? Because [info]antonstrout, author of 'Dead To Me', 'Deader Still', 'Dead Matter' and 'Dead Waters' has already gotten on board to write a counterpoint story! That's right -- once we have plowed our way through the slush, Anton will review our favorite stories and then choose ONE from among them to write a counterpoint to.

The end result will be a double-sided book with two covers (one featuring artwork for Anton's story, the other featuring artwork to coincide with the protagonist's point of view). Stories will be printed upside-down from one another -- flip the book over, and start fresh from the top! I can't wait to see the end result! Check out Faery Taile Project #1 here to see what we have in mind: http://www.amazon.com/Faery-Taile-Project-Book-One/dp/0979088968/ref=sr_1_1?s=gateway&ie=UTF8&qid=1285294441&sr=8-1

Here are the requirements:

Story length must be between 7500 and 12,000 words
Stories must be humorous
Stories must appeal to a broad range of folks -- from twelve years old to adult (so no raunchy humor, please!)
Stories must be single POV, from the protagonist's point of view (this will take some finesse -- leaving enough details to the imagination that Anton can create a counterpoint, yet creating a rich-enough world that the reader won't be left wanting)
Submission period: October 1st, 2010 to 11:59:59pm December 31st, 2010

Any fairy tale is fair game (except red hood of course, for obvious reasons)!

The payment? $.06 per word and seeing your name next to [info]antonstrout's!

Huzzah!

How I love my netbook, let me count the ways
[info]sonyamsipes
1. My Gateway netbook is so small and light that I can stuff it into the same laptop bag as my work laptop (that's right, I carry two laptops to and from work every day) and it doesn't make me walk like the Hunchback of Notre Dame.

2. My netbook has an almost full-sized keyboard which means less hand-cramping when I am on a marathon writing spree!

3. My netbook has enough get-up-and-go-juice that I frequently use it to VPN from wherever I am at 'into' work so that I can do my job anywhere, even at the mall, rather than being chained to the desk at my house or office.

4. My netbook has a really good battery life, so on a full charge it will last me all week for my lunchtime writing bouts.

5. My netbook is Red! So it's feisty & fun and everyone knows it belongs to me (because I am Red Sonya, of course).

Comme ci, Comme ca.
[info]sonyamsipes
23000 brand new words – not counting the thousands of revised words that have been deleted & rewritten. And I am only on page 181 out of 255. This is just shy of 33% new book. So far. And I’m not even done yet.

I have a list of 14 bullet points that I need to ‘get done’ before the final plotline is finished. So far in the last forty or so pages, I have accomplished two of those bullets. Will I get the rest done in 10,000 words? Probably not. I will probably go over 10,000. But then perhaps – there are still plenty of revised words that I will need to delete and rewrite.

THEN… I will have to do it all again to add bits in for aura combat / hand to hand combat / steampunk ambience / morning formation fatigue

Then maybe it will be done enough for my writing partners to read it.

Some days I feel like I am really making progress, like it’s flowing like water, and then there are other days – like today – where I see how much is left and I think holy crap I still have a lot of work to do. And then I feel a little depressed. Because even though the progress I have made is very steady and very measurable, I really do still have a lot of work to do.

And, I think I need a new title. Again. Sigh.

Happy Hulk Hercules Day!
[info]sonyamsipes
Stop by and give congratulations to author Catherine Schaff-Stump [info]cathschaffstump on the official release of her first novel, Hulk Hercules Professional Wrestler!

Any day now...

I will have exciting news of the Faery Taile kynde!

Stay Tuned!

In The Mail!
[info]sonyamsipes
Hercules Haiku winner's copies are in the mail!

Also in the mail, copies of HHPW to various production companies that had requested a copy when it was published. Let's not hold our breath folks -- but still, how cool is it to be able to say that Catherine's Book is being looked at by HOLLYWOOD?

Also, Catherine is at WisCon this weekend and will be doing at least one reading & signing while she is there so stop in and look her up! Also you will find copies of HULK HERCULES PROFESSIONAL WRESTLER for sale in the dealers room at the Room of One's Own dealer table.

My Master Plan -- taking over libraries everywhere!
[info]sonyamsipes
Before I outline my master plan to you peeps, a couple of tidbits:

1. Hulk Hercules Professional Wrestler is on Amazon.Com with full Annotation and everything! I am not sure why BN.com has not updated with the annotation yet, but I keep looking (It's also CHEAPER on BN.com). Both sites have a sales ranking (Go, Catherine!) so that's GREAT! So spread the word and pass out the links...

Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Hercules-Professional-Wrestler-Catherine-Schaff-Stump/dp/0979088976

BN.Com:
http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Hulk-Hercules-Professional-Wrestler/Catherine-Schaff-Stump/e/9780979088971/?itm=1&USRI=hulk+hercules+professional+wrestler

2. Books are coming in from the printer tomorrow, so HERCULES HAIKU winners' books will be mailed on Thursday!

3. My Master Plan to take over America's Libraries...
I am in the process of ordering 'Hulk Hercules Samplers' from a local printer. These will be little 'perfect bound' books with the first three chapters and the HHPW cover, annotation and ordering information. I will be pairing these samplers witha press release and a CatsCurious Press catalog, all in a neat little package.

I am looking for VOLUNTEERS! to go to their local libraries (both PUBLIC and elementary / middle school!) and give these to the librarians who do the ordering there. Ultimately the head librarian for the school district or library system would be the person who does the ordering, but this is not always the case. I figure if someone beings the packet in and hands it to them face to face -- HHPW and CatsCurious Press will leave a more LASTING impression than some random book or catalog that they receive in the mail.

Don't forget -- HHPW was picked up for distribution by FLR and BWI (in addition to Ingram, Baker & Taylor, Amazon.com, BN.com and others) which are the two largest LIBRARY Wholesalers in the USA.

Can I get some volunteers? Anyone out there willing to do a little legwork on Catherine's & My behalf to help us make this book a success?

If you're interested, drop a comment below with how many sampler packs you will need in order to target the public & school libraries in your area, and when I get the samplers back from the printers I will whisk some in the mail to you.

Thanks in advance!

Go Team!

Ups and Downs
[info]sonyamsipes
Today I read a post which I really enjoyed -- it even caused me to get al ittle misty-eyed... http://acrowesnest.blogspot.com/ (I'm the only tough-as-nails broad I know who tears up at sappy movies and long distance commercials).

The post deals with the ups and downs of getting your first book published and I have to say that the last entry just got to me. You see, I was that girl. In many ways, I still am. And the idea that a young lady may one day write me a similar email when I finally land on the bookshelves, that touches me.

I do my best to inspire my children -- I suspect I am not the only mother who does that :-) But the chance to inspire a totally random child? The chance to show her that her dream is not only viable but valuable? That's a reward I am looking forward to. I hope I get a chance to be that writer some day.

And the winners are....

I have replied to the three lucky winners for the Hercules Haiku contest -- winners, please send a message to my inbox with details on where to send the book!

Here they are listed below in no particular order...

Life Lately
[info]sonyamsipes
I know I haven't posted much in the last couple of months except to plug HULK HERCULES PROFESSIONAL WRESTLER by Catherine Schaff-Stump (which is awesome, is the first novel from CatsCurious Press, and you should run off to BN.com and buy it RIGHT NOW for those two reasons alone) so I thought it was time for a small personal update.

I have been very steadily working on PHOEBE at lunch during my workday -- ever since I started my new job at Levi Strauss. This means that I get about 800-1000 words a day done on the book and it is coming along amazingly well. I redrafted my pitch (which some of you have seen) and started interweaving a second POV character into the story since the new major plot thrust was missing some pivotal scenes that just could not be pulled off from a guardian angel's point of view. I needed someone stronger, more bad-ass, more in the action... so Phoebe's brother URI has become the second MC for the book which is now called DEMON'S GAP.

I am almost done with these new revisions and actually have a partial out on the book presently... not going to say with whom, since I don't want to jinx it. I had so little traction the first time around that when I got a request on the first query I sent out for this 'new' version, I just stopped there. And held my breath. Still holding it, actually. And polishing, polishing, polishing at the same time.

Lucifer is up next. He needs a facelift too. But his facelift will not need nearly as much overhaul.

The other really exciting thing going on is that one of my short stories (which you can find on here somewhere under the tag mysnippets), called NAKED REVENGE, is being turned into a short film called DIRT NAP. The guys at RADFX have not started shooting the actual movie yet, but they HAVE put together a teaser trailer which you can see below... I LOVE it. I can't wait until the rest of the filming gets underway!

Here's the link: http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Hulk-Hercules-Professional-Wrestler/Catherine-Schaff-Stump/e/9780979088971/?itm=4&USRI=hulk+hercules

Please pass it on to those friends and family that you think would enjoy a fun read geared towards middle-graders (8-12 y/o).

There may be more HHPW news coming soon... lets cross our fingers!

Book Description (formally called "Annotation"):

Spending the school year at their Nonna Sofia's house while their parents were away seems like business as usual for Tony and his annoying older sister Bianca - until they notice something strange about their 'Uncle' Leo. Like that he wears a lion's head cape as part of his professional wrestling costume, he has a girlfriend named Diana, and that he's as strong as an ox. It doesn't take long before they begin to wonder if Leo is even their uncle at all.

When Tony's friend Hannah shows them the Modern Gods website, everything begins to make sense. But before they can confront Leo about what's really going on, an evil old woman named Hera shows up at one of Leo's wrestling matches and transports him into the world of ancient mythology, accidentally bringing Tony along for the ride.

In order to escape, Tony and Leo must fight their way through to the end of the ancient stories, with Leo playing the role of Hercules and Tony as Iolaus. But Tony had better be careful, because in Hera's mythical world he can end up just as dead as he can in the real one.

Job? Check.
[info]sonyamsipes
I start at Levi Strauss on Monday, March 8th, 2010.

Some stress just slid off my shoulders. My husband has two interviews tomorrow -- fingers crossed!

Thanks everyone for all of the support. I really super appreciate it. Now I am going to send as many positive thoughts as I can, towards my friends who were laid off at the same time as me. Hopefully they find something good, too.

Intredpidity. Is that a word?
[info]sonyamsipes
Today my husband said "Even if we don't make a lot of money this year, we should still count 2010 as 'our year' because 'They' tried, but couldn't beat us."

Well said. Normally I am the ebullient one in our marriage, but since learning that my hubby's job is over as well, I have felt that mantle of responsibility settle on my shoulders (did not want; was looking forward to leisurely job hunting!). It's heavy.

I did have a good interview today though with a small software firm called 'Cogent'. Whether they want to hire me or not, the interview felt good & was good for my ego. Have another lined up for Wednesday afternoon with another company. Though after that my calendar is blank. I may have to turn on my Monster.com resume & update it after all. I was trying to avoid the flood of redundant phone calls. Oh well -- I will wait until next week before I do that.

Thanks for the well-wishes everyone. They are much appreciated.

When it rains, it definitely pours!
[info]sonyamsipes
So today my husband tried to submit his timecard. He couldn't log in to the VPN, so he called the helpdesk. Turns out his account was deactivated. Turns out his boss canceled his contract -- but no one told him/us. His friend knew, but assumed we had already been told, so never said anything about it.

Love Corporate America.

We're still in good spirits here, though. Keep your fingers crossed for us! Heopfully we both land something better soon. :-)

Dunh Dunh Dunh...
[info]sonyamsipes
Remember that layoff at my company I talked about? Apparently it was today and not last week.

So guess who's sitting at home (in sweats, drinking coffee) working on her resume right now?

UPDATE: I heard the number of total people company-wide was 250 137. One of my teammates was also laid off, and several others in IT. The rest of that number must be from the business side (call center, legal department, etc).

But... I have a phone interview @ 5:00 for a position with Levi Strauss. Fingers Crossed!

ConDFW 2010
[info]sonyamsipes
ConDFW 1:

Well I made it here in one piece. Truth be told, the roads were not bad despite how awful they looked from my living room window. Apparently there were quite a few cancellations for the con due to weather (Jack McDevitt is trapped in his house in Atlanta -- they have the same blizzard we just had -- it just moved over a couple of states), and many panels are mostly empty. So, I volunteered. Guess we'll all finally see how good or bad I am as a panelist. I am pretty good at public speaking, so perhaps it won't be awful. Plus, I've been meaning to get more involved (in panels, etc) for awhile now and just havne't gotten around to doing it. Fate is funny like that. :-D

See you guys tomorrow!

Snowpocalypse!
[info]sonyamsipes
I am originally from Wisconsin. I did not move here until I was 19 years old, so I am well-versed in the culture of snow, ice, and driving in same.

However, since I moved to TX, I have never seen this much snow in one place except when I would go home to visit my family in the Great White Tundra. And it just. keeps. coming.

http://pics.livejournal.com/sonyamsipes/gallery/0001ydgq

Also, I thought I might mention one more thing that would make you jaded northerners realize the novelty of this situation. We have no snow plows here. None, not a one. So when the weather gets bad (for instance if all of this freezes) the metroplex will basically shut down. Seriously. What a shame that ConDFW is this weekend, too.

Phoebe: Plan of Attack
[info]sonyamsipes
Regarding my melancholy post from last night -- I have decided today that what I really need is a plan of attack. So what I am doing is this:

I have created a spreadsheet in which I will enter all the revision comments from my crit partners that I agree with or that make sense to me. I shall record who suggested them, the general idea of their critique, the section in the MS that they were referring to, and my brainstorm thoughts regarding this matter.

I will not use this spreadsheet for trivial items such as comma/ellipses placements, word choice, etc, but for specific items that require some actual revision rather than just correction.

When I get the results back from Critter #3, I will enter her comments as well, and then I will revise from there. That way I will make all the changes I agree with first (crossing them off of my list as I go, I love lists) and then will be able to see how it all looks before I decide to make any additional changes -- if I even do.

What do you think?

Enthusiasm / Motivation Fail
[info]sonyamsipes
Two days ago I felt on top of the world. I had finished revisions on chapters 1-3 on Phoebe and sent it off to crit group. I just knew I was onto something. In fact, I just knew that THIS YEAR would be the year I would sell both of my novels.

Today? Today I feel like I may never sell a novel and that I can't write for crap. I wanted to get a lot of work done on one or the other of the books (Lucifer or Phoebe) but to be honest, I am still sore enough from the surgery that sitting for any length of time, much less in a desk chair, is uncomfortable. So I am not getting writing done. And that means that next week when I go back to the office full time (as opposed to light working from home which is what I am doing this week) my hours will ramp back up to the ridiculous pace they were (probably) and I will still have no time for writing.

So why write?

Also, I got two of three crits back already (so soon!) and they have completely opposite things to say. So now what? Which critter do I take more seriously? Which one do I listen to? Do I listen to either? I guess I have decided to wait for critter #3 to send me her opinions before I hare off in any direction, just in case she says some similar things to one or the other fellow critter. And there's always the possibility that she may say yet more things that are opposite leaving me with lots of subjective opinions and no sure direction such as 'well this must obviously be wrong because all three definitely hate it'. Sigh. Again.

Still alive and kicking...
[info]sonyamsipes
Hello everyone! Sorry its been so long for an update. My day job as a DBA has been incredibly horrible as of late (several months now with 60+ hour weeks) but our team banded together, put out 'feet' down and told them that we would all walk and find other places to go if they didn't do something about the ridiculousness of it all... so it seems that they are actually going to listen.

But then there's supposed to be a big layoff tomorrow, too. SO, maybe not.

Also, I am recovering from surgery -- this is the first time in ten or so days that I have felt up to getting onto the computer, so I apologize for not letting you all know sooner. Don't worry, this surgery wasn't a surprise at all, but it wasn't minor either which means that I have been basically using my sick time as a way to recover (sad, but thankfully) from my day job.

In more news:

Check out my latest pubbed story 'Score!' (a zombie unicorn tale) on the Abandoned Towers website (click on 'Fantasy' then scroll down until you see 'Score!'). This story is an oldie that has been brushed off and tightened up and I am glad to have finally found a home for it -- YA shorts are hard to place!

And even more exciting:

We are expecting a shipment of ARCs for "Hulk Hercules: Professional Wrestler"
late next week (or possibly early the following, depending on shipping) so guess what that means? CONTEST! FINALLY. (yeah I know, believe me. Author [info]cathschaffstump is a saint for putting up with me!)

As for news about my writing/novels? Still revising Lucifer (see above, not much time lately, alas) -- have a new partial request for Phoebe (for which I have completely rewritten the beginning... after a few more tweaks will go out to my beta readers for approval) and then sssssshhhhh... someone special is making a short film out of another short story that I have written. Will let you know more when I am allowed to say more :-D

Calling All Artists!
[info]sonyamsipes

Can you paint?  Can you draw?  Are you a digital maestro?

Well, Janine Ashbless' upcoming eBook needs a cover -- and we are asking YOU to send us your best.

The "Arabian Nights" inspired HEART OF FLAME is a steamy erotic romance filled to the brim with monsters, magic and mayhem.

Taqla, a young sorceress disguised as a man, has been hired to assist handsome Rafiq on a dangerous quest.  Ahleme, the most beautiful woman in the world, has been kidnapped by Yazid, a rebellious djinn, who plans to coerce her into becoming the mother of his child.  Taqla and Rafiq must find Ahleme before this child -- this abomination --  can be conceived.

As the unlikely pair race across the desert,  a dangerous encounter with ghouls strips Taqla's magical disguise away, leaving both her face and her emotions bare to Rafiq's scrutiny. Burdened by this unwelcome revelation, the two struggle to continue their quest, though their relationship grows more strained with each passing hour.  It is only when Taqla is nearly killed that Rafiq begins to view her as something more than just a means to an end.  Yet Taqla's past experiences and fear of being diminished by marriage cause her to remain aloof.

Will Taqla's fierce independence soften enough for her to see Rafiq through eyes less jaded?  Or will their approaching battle with the djinn kill them both, rendering the argument moot?

Main Characters:

Taqla -- green eyes, dark hair, no eye makeup, attractive, veiled
Rafiq -- handsome, muscular, dark hair, dark eyes
Ahleme -- (kidnapped woman), the most beautiful woman in the world (with dark eyes & kohl, and dark hair, veiled)
Yazid -- Djinn with bluish skin, bald with black eyebrows and silvery/pale eyes

Terms:  The winner, chosen by Janine Ashbless herself, will receive $175 for the use of their artwork for a period of three years.  The artist will retain the copyright to their artwork.  The artist will also receive a free copy of the eBook for their contribution.  No royalties will be paid to the artist.  The artist will receive our standard contract.  The artist will also receive credit for the cover art on the copyright page of the book.

CatsCurious Press / CatScratch Books reserves the right to cancel the contest if art of sufficiently professional quality is not submitted before the deadline of MIDNIGHT CST on DECEMBER 2, 2009.  Please, only submit your best work! (I know you knew that already :-) )

Submission, Style & Medium:

Please send all submissions to catscuriouspress@yahoo.com, as a .JPG attachment.  Please ensure that images are of sufficient resolution to look good on a computer screen.  If your art is chosen, you will be asked to send a hi-res .TIFF.  The final eBook trim size is 4"x6".

Style... what can we say about style? We are open to interpretation.  We are open to various mediums (though all submissions must be rendered digitally in the end, as this is an eBook) and any style will be considered -- from traditional romance book covers (mostly naked, supine man & woman) to more iconographic styles (such as seen on the covers of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight or New Moon), or something a little more abstract/graphic, as seen on the cover of Maggie Steifvater's Shiver.  Basically, we want to see what you're inspired to create -- no holds barred... Modest nudity will be considered, but graphic sexual depictions will not.

Feel free to do the title layout ("Heart of Flame", author's name "Janine Ashbless"), if you so desire.  This is not required, but if you feel that your cover will be more reflective of your creativity with the layout added in, please do!

If you do not own the copyright on one or more of the images that you are using in your cover submission, please make sure you have the artist's permission (images used from royalty free sites in conjunction with your own art are OK, as long as you have purchased the right to use them).   Not owning the copyright will not disqualify you, but for legal reasons, it is a detail that I will need to be aware of, so please include it in your cover email.

You may submit as many pieces as you like, but only one will be chosen, no matter how many you send in... so again, please only send your best!

Pass the word!  We want some really good art!

DEADLINE:  MIDNIGHT CST on DECEMBER 2, 2009.

Naked Revenge

As promised -- another previously published story by yours truly.  I am actually a little proud of this one -- I still remember the spark of inspiration that hit when I was watching Animal Planet with my husband and kids.  I had to get up from the couch RIGHT THEN so that I wouldn't lose the moment.

The Elephant in the Room

Today I received an email from our NYC Pitch and Shop instructor containing the coveted email address of the Big Name Editor (BNE) who wanted to read my Lucifer book.

GAH.  Now I must really buckle down and actually polish the damned thing.  I have a few more scenes to add, and then I think I am in for some serious tweakage to make the emotional arc end where I want it to.  Because of course, that BNE was very interested in whether my book *was* the first of a series -- and if not --*could* it be one. (That's a tasty bit of information for anyone trying to decide whether to write a series or not).

So of course I abandoned the idea of making one long epic book and went back to my original idea, which was a trilogy.  Which means that for it to be a GOOD trilogy, the first book must stand on its own two feet (with its own climax & pacing & and Hair raising stakes) but still carry the overall plot forward to the 'middle'.

As it stands, I am almost there.

Once I finish requested revisions on a short for Abandoned Towers (and hopefully they accept said revisions) I PROMISE I will finish up Lucifer.  It will be done in time for Christmas.  Because don't forget -- there's Phoebe to work on, too.  (And boy did I figure out how to fix that baby -- am looking forward to that one!).

Warning: I will be asking for beta readers for the Lucifer book in the not too-distant future.

Calling All friends -- again -- just in case :-)
[info]sonyamsipes
Just in case you missed my late night post!

Joe Canzano is a very funny fellow writer that I met at the New York Pitch Conference.  He has just created an LJ account, joeythesquash, and doesn't know anyone here yet.  But I know you guys are a good bunch of peeps and will 'friend' him as a warm "Welcome to LJ land".

I look forward to reading more of his witty/sarcastic essays and snippets -- and to find out how his current WIP progresses... he had a couple of requests for it at the conference -- personally I think he's destined to see it in print form sooner rather than later.

Some people have mentioned that I should post some of my own writing on my blog. I'm not too sure how I feel about that (a little shy, actually) but since I have already sold a few pieces and I am now free to do with them what I want (yes, it's been THAT long since I have written any new short fiction)... I thought I would put one up.

Ladies and Gentlemen, prepare to be underwhelmed by the first piece of fiction I ever sold. To AlienSkin Magazine...

PWF or PCF or whatever you want to call it
[info]sonyamsipes

Post Workshop Funk.  Post Convention Funk.  Whatever.

It's a trend I have noticed that occurs whenever I come home from a particularly stimulating workshop or convention... I get pumped.  I am ready to WRITE!  I am ready to make those editors and agents cry from the beauty of my prose.

And then I get home and I sort of fritter my time away.  Doing this, that... looking for something else to do -- anything else -- other than write.

I mean at first, I had things to do that really needed to be done.  I had to finish doing the first pass edits on "Heart of Flame" by Janine Ashbless ... and finally get my response back to the author.  Then I had to get the ball rolling with the cover art for "Hulk Hercules: Professional Wrestler" by Catherine Schaff-Stump (unexpected frustrations here).  Then I had to read & edit a chapter for a friend.  Then suddenly -- all of that was done and I was free to work on my own stuff.

Sure I work a full-time job (that usually gets more than its allotted 40 hours a week... lately its been more like 50-60) and I have a family that I like to spend time with.  But in the time that falls between the cracks, I find myself aimlessly surfing the web, or dithering my time away in other fruitless ways.

Why do I do this?  What is the most effective way to stop it from happening?  Am I alone in this PWF/PCF world?

Sigh.

Eidts & News

Just out: Edits for HEART OF FLAME by Janine Ashbless.  FInally -- Janine was a saint.  She let me take the time I needed to get my stuff together over this stressful summer.  And not only that but she sent me a stellar, steamy romance too.  Think Arabian Nights meets Taming of the Shrew meets 9 1/2 weeks!

Just in: Copy Edits from Catherine Schaff-Stump (another saintly author) for HULK HERCULES: PROFESSIONAL WRESTLER.  This story will appeal to middle-grade readers who have a taste for action mixed with the Fantastic.  Follow Tony Vanelli as he and his Sister Bianca and their friend Hannah uncover the amazing truth about Tony's Uncle Leo -- zookeeper turned professional wrestler turned Greek god?

Also-- we are closing in on cover art for HHPW (hopefully I will have something to post in the next few weeks) and formatting for HHPW is about to begin.  You know what that means?  Contests coming soon!

Things I am bad at:
[info]sonyamsipes
Saying no to people who ask nicely.

Gardening.

Organization (except my closet and pantry which are very organized).

Being in Limbo.  (relationship limbo, stuck-in-the-middle-of-plotting-limbo, agent-querying limbo; yeah, basically any kind of limbo).

Wasting Time
[info]sonyamsipes
I thought LJ was a time-waster for me.

That was before I tried Facebook. Oooh boy, like I needed another mindless distraction to keep me from earning a living/writing/editing/raising my children. Just kidding. Heh.

OTOH, I found a gazillion people I went to highschool with! So I guess that's kind of cool :-P

Capitulation... or is it networking?
[info]sonyamsipes
I have finally created a Facebook page. I am not sure what to do with it yet (it seems very busy compared to LJ!) but come and by and visit! (I am listed as Sonya M. Shannon in case there's confusion, because I think there's another Sonya Shannon on there already. oops!)

Artist!
[info]sonyamsipes
The choice of artist for the "Hulk Hercules: Professional Wrestler" cover has officially been chosen... Please stop by and visit http://seeso2d.deviantart.com/ (seeso2d) at DeviantArt and take a look at the fabulous art he produces. I'm sure you will see why I asked him to join the CatsCurious Press team! Pay special attention to the picture labeled 'Birthday' ... that's the one that decided it for me.

ApolloCon this weekend!
[info]sonyamsipes
Anyone else planning to be there? My friend Trish and I are carpooling with another lady we met at ConDFW this year, and we will be arriving in Houston on Thursday afternoon. Sorry no room party this time (FenCon!) money's been a little too tight for that this spring/summer.

Website Update
[info]sonyamsipes
My talented web-guy WEBSbyQC, has implemented my LJ RSS feed in the Tidbits section of CatsCuriousPress.com! Kudos to Quincint! This will make it much easier for those who stop by the website to see what CatsCurious Press & CatScratch Books has been up to... and easier for me too -- now I only need to remember to put updates in one place. :-D

And if you need someone to put your website together for you (not the design part, but the nuts and bolts part) Quincint is your man! You can contact him at Quincint *at* WebsByQC.com.

Publishing News
[info]sonyamsipes
I have three manuscripts on my desk -- one being read, the other two waiting on me...

Sorry to my authors for taking so long (company in town, plus holiday)...

Sorry to our reader's for not having much time/news to post.

But. Soon. There will be news!

Potential...

Potential Sale. Not going to say anymore, except that:

No, it's not one of my novels. Alas.

But still!

How to know if you and your spouse are well-suited for one another
[info]sonyamsipes
Today I was feeling mushy -- trying to get my husband to pay some gratuitous attention to me, especially that part about saying the sweet nothings...

Me: No, No. You're not saying it right [mock sniffle]. Say it like me.

Him: [repeats syrupy sweet phrase like a malfunctioning robot]

Me: [flounces away] [Sigh]. Well, you're certainly no ... who's that nose guy?

Him: Cyrano Debergerac.

Me: Yeah -- you're certainly no Cyrano de Bergerac.

Him: No, I am the Kwisatz Haderach!
